I am a writer and historian who came to the former rather late in life, writing four volumes "Mark Twain Day By Day." Just before I got into the Twain writing, I began writing short stories, a few of which morphed into a hardboiled private eye detective novel (Mike Angel Series). After studying hundreds of such books, and admiring Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane's work, I wrote four of them--and oh! how much fun they were to write. There are now NINETEEN in the series and I'm taking a break for an undetermined time. #19, "Dark Vigil" may be the last. We shall see.

I also studied composition theory, and read thousands of short stories. I taught writing at two for-profit colleges. Like Mark Twain, I love cats, am father to 3 girls, and am a Portland Or, native who has lived in various parts of the country. During a break after # 11 in the Mike Angel Mystery series, I wrote and published "Self-Edit Your Novel," a 124 page in-depth look at self-editing. I'm now taking a break from all things Mark Twain and all things Mike Angel.

Dark Moon

Set in Portland, Oregon, 1965. Mike befriends an eccentric veteran with a drinking problem, whose estranged wife has been sleeping with hoodlums and racketeers. One night the man shows up at Mike’s office asking for a ride to the US side of the Canadian border. On the way the man discloses his wife had been murdered and he was being framed. Expecting a nice quiet life and a new start with love interest Molly Bennett, Mike is shaken by the history of crime and corruption still going on.
